For Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis, Dr. Curington uses an accredited lab company called PVSA.org. They are experts in semen analysis. They use a convenient mailing system so you can do everything in the comfort of your own home without having to come into the lab.
There is a link below that you click to order the kit, but first read the instructions and follow the steps below:
1) Wait 12 weeks after your vasectomy
If you send in your test before 12 weeks, you will have a higher chance of having residual sperm in the sample and needing to send in another test. When you send in your test at 12 weeks, about 5% of patients need to send in another sample. This is normal, and this means that 95% of patients will only need to send in one sample. Once again, if you send your sample before 12 weeks, the chances are much higher that you will need to do the test again. The key point here is that you don’t send in your test before 12 weeks.
2) Order the test online
There is a link at the bottom of the page. You click this link, and then type in your name and address into their order form. You pay the small fee, and the lab will mail you the test kit to the address you give them. Most people order one kit, but you can certainly order two if you feel more comfortable with a second test too.
3) Produce your semen sample at home
You know how to do this. This can be a solo effort or a “team effort” with you and your wife or partner. You get to choose.
4) Put the sample in the kit and mail it back.
After making the semen sample, put the sample in the plastic container, seal the lid nice and tight, and mail the sample to the lab in the box they have included. You don’t need to use ice or any other special packaging because the kit from PVSA.org has a special preservative in the plastic container. You will receive your results in about a week after you mail the sample back.

Please do not use the link above if you haven’t had a vasectomy with Dr. Curington. This lab does a test that is specific for post-vasectomy sperm counting. If you are looking for a semen test for an infertility workup, you will need very different testing. Please see your own physician for more details about the special testing you need for evaluation of infertility.
